DescriptionUrban research at the Institute for European Urban Studies raises questions about public space in cities, the relationship between city and countryside, public involvement in urban planning, the multi-functionality of the downtown area and the social integration of the various groups of people living in cities. The doctoral programme, which was supported by the DAAD and DFG as an International Doctoral Programme between the years 2002 and 2007, offers graduate students a diverse curriculum in the fields of urban design, architectural history, sociology, spatial planning and project development. The interdisciplinary urban research is represented by a broad spectrum of instructors in architecture, urban planning, sociology, political science, geography and history.
Within the doctoral programme, the specialized research group “Urban Heritage” (supported by the DAAD 2008-2010) dedicates itself to issues of cultural heritage in the context of current and prospective urban development. “Urban Heritage” is thematically innovative, as it operates with an extended concept of “heritage.” It considers the political and social constitution of the city in terms of its social ability to integrate and the value it places on the preservation of its local democracy. This approach goes beyond the general preservation of historic buildings and monuments and the historical awareness of urban planning. Strategies and basic approaches are sought, which use current social challenges (demography, mobility, globalization and multiple cultures) as advantages for the development of urban heritage.
RequirementsAt least a good Master`s degree (M.A.) or equivalent from a recognised university in a subject related to spatial research as well as a very good previous academic performance are required for admission to the doctorate programme. Candidates must be proficient in English, and German is strongly recommended.
